Q: We are told that the British Government has decided to stop sending the Sats copies at the same time it was sent to schools in England. We were also told that our tests would not be marked in England, and that this decision would be applied to all International Schools outside the UK. Is that a fact? Is that change going to be applied starting from the current academic year 2005/2006?

Q: Does my child need a tutor?
A: A tutor will always be useful to identify weak areas and help to work on them. Be sure to choose the right tutor for your child.
Q: How can I help my child?
A: Try to keep up-to-date about what your child is learning, regularly review their books (looking out for error patterns like not indenting paragraphs enough) and associating number facts with everyday objects.
Q: How do I complete my childs profile for their secondary school?
A: You need to split into sections:

Academic
Strengths and any notable credits(winning an award)

Sports (Team and non-team sports)
Strengths and any notable credits(winning an award)
or being part of the school team

Music

Dance

ICT

Iteraction with other pupils

Particular responsibilities - including mentoring, and schools council duties.
Q: How important are SATs at the end of Key Stage 2?
A: SATs provide individual pupil information about the National Curriculum levels that pupils have achieved at the end of KS2. Results are based on both tests and teacher assessments. Secondary schools use the results to form grouping/ability sets etc. as SATs results are passed on to the secondary schools when pupils transfer. SATs results are reported to the DfES with individual schools` performance published in performance tables, usually referred to as `league tables`. As with KS1 and KS3, the end of KS2 statutory assessments are part of the Government`s commitment to raising standards. Each LEA is also judged on the performance of its schools and compared nationally.
Q: How important are SATs at the end of Key Stage 3?
A: The tests in english, mathematics and science at the end of Key Stage 3 help pupils with their teachers choose the appropriate courses to follow leading to GCSE or vocational qualifications.

Q: How long are the tests?
A: 7-year-olds - less than three hours
11-year-olds - Five and a half to six hours altogether
14-year-olds - Seven hours altogether
Q: How will I get my child's results?
A: The school will send you a report what National Curriculum levels your child has reached.

Q: What are key stage 1 statutory assessments?
A: These provide a `snapshot` of a child`s attainment at the end of this key stage (end of infants).

They consist of `Tasks` or `Tests`.
They are not exams!
They are designed in such a way that they help teachers assess children in some detail in English and Mathematics.

All children in their final year of Key Stage 1 must be assessed. All children who are moving on to the Key Stage 2 (junior school) programmes of study in the next school year are regarded as being in their final year of Key Stage 1.

Not all children take the tests since they may not be suitable forms of assessment for some children. Teachers enter children for tests and tasks according to their knowledge of the children`s abilities.

If the children are not taking part in tests, the tasks support teachers` judgements about the children`s attainment.

At the end of the SAT`s, teachers then report both the task and test results and teacher assessments for the core subjects. Core subjects are English, Mathematics and Science. There is not a test or task for Science.

Q: What happens if my child misses a test?

A: In KS1, children who are absent on the day when a test takes place are given another opportunity to take the test. For KS2/3, children who miss a test are recorded as absent and are not given a test level in that subject. They will still receive a teacher assessment.
